The Mekelle Youth Centre (MYC) project was started in 2002 after the local government invited SIM to equip and operate one of the newly built youth centres in the city of Mekelle.
Mekelle is the capital of the Tigray region which borders Eritrea in northern Ethiopia. In the last 16 years, MYC has grown to provide services and activities for thousands of young people and sees over 700 people come daily to the centre.
MYC provide ESL classes, computer classes, HIV/AIDS and health education, a variety of sport programmes, a library, café, Bible club programmes and places for young people to socialise and grow together.
In recent months MYC have also begun teaching English to deaf youth, started sign language classes and begun an environmental club which seeks to engage in programmes with the wider community in the city of Mekelle. MYC provide opportunities for the young people to develop good character, learn biblical values and grow as the next generation in a rapidly changing city and country.
