Learning to read is a significant step in establishing the self-worth and development of an individual. Spiritually, illiteracy hinders church growth and the believers ability to grow in Christ. Read and Live works with Nigerien Hausa Evangelists to plant and strengthen churches. Using Scripture-based reading books, students of Read and Live learn to read while hearing the gospel.
There is a four month teaching season January to April each year with a resident teacher-evangelist at each host village. Opposition is evident and people are afraid to be seen with Christian workers, yet classes are doing well with both young and old learning together.
