Serving short term with SIM is an opportunity to step into cross-cultural mission, grow as a disciple of Jesus, and use your gifts to serve communities where Christ is least known.
Whether you join a summer team for 2–3 weeks or explore an individual placement for 6–12 months, we’ll help you discern where you could serve, prepare well, and go with the support of SIM and your sending church.
How you can serve
- Join a Short Term Team
2–3 weeks | usually during the summer
A team gives you a focused opportunity to experience God at work in a different culture, learn alongside others, and grow in confidence as you share your faith.
You’ll serve with a small team, usually connected to an existing SIM ministry or local church partner. Activities may include things like youth ministry, sports outreach, prayer, church support, practical service, and conversations about Jesus.
Summer teams are ideal if you want to:
• Take a step more into cross-cultural mission
• Grow in faith and obedience
• Learn from mission workers and local believers
• Serve alongside others in a supportive team
• Explore whether God may be calling you into long term mission
Future team locations and projects will be confirmed as opportunities develop.
- Explore a Placement / Gap year
6–12 months | individual placement
A longer placement gives you time to learn, build relationships, understand culture, and invest in a community alongside mission workers in different countries.
SIM works in many places around the world, and placements can be found to suit most skills, experience, availability, and sense of calling. You may serve in areas such as education, healthcare, sports ministry, church support, community work, discipleship, youth ministry, or practical service.
A 6–12 month placement could be right for you if you want to:
- Go deeper in language and culture learning
- Serve using your gifts in a way that glorifies God
- Explore mission as part of a gap year, career break, or next step of faith
- Grow as a disciple while helping others know Jesus more
- Discern whether long term mission may be part of your future

When you serve short term with SIM, you are not going alone. We help you prepare, connect with the right placement, and serve with care and support around you.

We’re not looking for perfect people. We’re looking for followers of Jesus who are willing to be shaped by God, offer their gifts, step into new experiences, and serve with humility.
What happens next?
- Enquire – Tell us a little about yourself, your church, your availability, and what kind of mission opportunity you’re interested in.
2. Have a conversation – One of our team will talk with you about your gifts, experience, sense of calling, and possible opportunities.
3. Prepare well – If you apply and are accepted, we’ll guide you through the right training, checks, logistics, support raising, and preparation for your placement or team.
4. Go and serve – You’ll serve alongside SIM mission workers, local believers, or partner ministries, learning from others and joining in God’s mission.
