Irene Westendorp

Irene serves as a nurse at the CEML hospital in Lubango, Angola, primarily involved in the care for obstetric fistula patients. She is sent by De Levensbron church in Nijkerk, Netherlands.

The women have suffered a difficult labour, resulting in the loss of their baby and loss of control over their urine (a side-complication of the difficult and long labour). The majority of the women are abandoned by their husbands and families, leaving them with additional trauma.

“My vision and mission is to help these women see that they are loved and valued, by God, through the program we offer them. Part of this program is that we teach them skills and certain health topics.”

In addition to the medical work, the centre teaches Portuguese, literacy and Bible stories, enabling and equipping the women to return to their communities.
